FREE Activities to Prevent Summer Slide

โ€‹.โ€‹

Hi Reader,

I hope you're doing well. Sorry I've been absent the past couple of weeks. Granted, I'm guessing no one notices when I don't email weekly, I'm not that important, but in case you do - I apologize.

Turns out, due in part to the passing of my mother in April, I'm currently in an autoimmune flare. My symptoms are significantly worse than usual, I've had a lot of medical appointments, and I'm trying to get back to baseline. Some of what that entails is reducing stress, letting things go, pausing on things that aren't essential to the life of myself or children, etc.

Hence, emailing isn't at the top of the life-sustaining list, so I let that lapse a bit.

Also, despite all of this, it is summer break for my kids, so I'm hanging out with them more, including going to the local beach as much as we can.

As you probably can tell by now, I am not one of those creators who emails daily, and I also don't want to email just for the sake of emailing. I want to share helpful information, not just clutter up your inbox. So when I'm to the point that I'm just trying to survive, I'm not going to burden you weekly with my woes. You know?

Which leads me to some hopefully helpful content in this email!

Prevent Summer Slide/Learning Loss

I know, summer is just starting, BUT it is important to prevent summer slide in our school-aged children. Our kids' teachers emailed out a long list of suggestions for the summer. At first, I was overwhelmed with the end of the school year, etc. and thought NOPE!! But then I reminded myself of my training as a school psych as well as the blog post I wrote about this topic last year. lol

It's also great in terms of building a daily routine. I don't want our whole summer to be scheduled, but my boys don't do well if we don't have at least an outline of a plan for the day.

Hence, I built in learning time after lunch each day when it's the peak of hotness outside, so we can be indoors, working on learning-related things for an hour or so.

On beach days or other days out of the house, I don't worry about it, but I'd like it to happen at least a few times a week.

Note: Not gonna lie, we haven't started this routine yet. With my autoimmune flare, medical appointments, my oldest's 10th birthday this week, beach days, etc. it just hasn't happened. We'll start by mid-June, though. Just wanting to show, I'm human too!

As a former school psych, I feel it's my duty to share this ๐Ÿ˜‰

I hope you're having warmer weather too!

Hope you have a good week!

Prefer to shop on Etsy since you already have an account there? You can still use Newsletter20 for an extra 20% off everything in my shop!

I'm also on Teachers Pay Teachers! Unfortunately, they don't have universal coupon codes (yet!), and only allow things related to teaching, but a LOT of my products are over there if you'd prefer to shop on TPT.

Best Basketball Hoops for Kids from Toddler to Adult

. Hi Reader, I don't know about you, but even up here in MN, it's feeling like summer! This has led to us wanting to be outside more often, and recently, my boys 'graduated' from their Little Tikes basketball hoop and wanted a bigger one. I started my research and found the perfect one that will grow with them! Of course, I wrote a blog post all about it, which you can see below. I'll include the toddler one too, as they used that from toddler age to early elementary, just fine. This new one,...

The Disappointment of Mother's Day, You're Not Alone

. Hi Reader, I hope your week is going well! I hope your Mother's Day went well and that you were spoiled by your kids!! If not, know that you're not alone. Year after year, I've heard from other moms that their Mother's Day was a disappointment...which led me to write the blog post below. I know that disappointment is common based on how many people find and read this particular blog post in May around Mother's Day in the U.S. and in March for Mother's Day in the UK. My Mother's Day was...

20+ Mother's Day Gift Ideas plus my plans for the first Mother's Day without my mom.

. Hi Reader, I hope your week is going well! Mother's Day is this weekend! Typically, I send Mother's Day emails way before now, but the past two months have been anything but typical, so I'm a bit off in my timing. Also, it's my first Mother's Day without my mom, since she passed less than a month ago, so it's hitting a bit differently this year. All that aside, I was chatting with a couple of friends last night, and we all had a common theme of what we're hoping for on Mother's Day this...
